Badminton Asia Team Championships 2024: Tai Tzu Ying pulls out last minute

Tokyo Olympics silver medalist, Tai Tzu Ying has decided to pull out of the Badminton Asia Team Championships last minute for unknown reasons. The Asian competition will be held in Shah Alam, Malaysia from February 13 to 18. Moreover, this biennial event serves as the Asian qualification for the Thomas and Uber Cup 2024, which will take place in Chengdu, China in May.

Tai, who won the silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the bronze medal at the 2021 World Championships in Huelva, Spain is currently focusing on recovering from her Knee and Back issues and preparing for the upcoming tournaments. She will participate in the BWF French Open 2024, a Super 750 event on the BWF World Tour, which will be held in Paris from March 5 to 10.

Tai Tzu Ying, the former world number one badminton player from Chinese Taipei, had a decent 2023 season with notable achievements. She won her fifth Taipei Open title in June, defeating USA’s Beiwen Zhang in straight games. She also clinched her fourth BWF World Tour Finals title in December, coming back from a game down to beat Spain’s Carolina Marin in a thrilling final. Tai reached the semi-finals of three other tournaments: the Malaysia Open, the All-England Championships, and the Singapore Open.

Tai’s decision to skip the tournament will be a great loss in the highest level of competitive badminton level. Nevertheless, there are players like PV Sindhu who will return to action. The 5 times BWF Championships medalist returns into action in this tournament. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, the first Indian pair to win the Asian Games gold medal will also make a return in the men’s doubles event after missing Indonesia Masters and Thailand Masters.
