Neeraj Chopra is a Javelin Thrower from India who is also the reigning Olympic champion and World Championship silver-medalist. During his childhood, Neeraj’s father put him in a gym in Madlauda and then in a gym in Panipat after neighborhood children teased him about being overweight as a child. He saw some javelin throwers while playing at Panipat’s Shivaji Stadium and decided to join them. He then competed in the Sports Authority of India center admissions trials in 2010.
Jaiveer Choudhary, a renowned javelin thrower, chose to train Neeraj. Choudhary and a few more experienced fighters who had trained in Jalandhar taught him the principles of the sport. His family agreed to let him live in Panipat while he developed his abilities when he rapidly earned his first medal, a bronze in the district championships.
Neeraj had a difficult time getting from his house to the stadium because there was no public transportation in his area. So, he used to catch rides from passing cars for the 16–17 km trip. Because of the lack of sufficient infrastructure at the Panipat Stadium, he later relocated to the Athletics Nursery at the Taluka Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula. He enlisted in the Indian Army in 2016 and is now a Junior Commissioned Officer with the rank of Naib Subedar.
In 2013, Neeraj took part in his first international athletics event, the World Youth Championships, which were held in Ukraine. He won the World Junior Championships in 2016, the South Asian Games in 2016, and both the Commonwealth and Asian Games in 2018. His greatest accomplishment came at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, where he won the gold medal in the men’s javelin with a throw of 87.58 metres on his second attempt. Neeraj is currently the most successful athlete in India, having won the Diamond League 2022 championship and earned a silver medal at the World Championship.
