Yalemzerf Yehualaw Densa, popularly known as Yalemzerf Yehualaw, is an Ethiopian long-distance runner, who specializes in 10km and marathon running events. She is also the world record holder in the 10 km road running competition. She is the reigning champion of the London Marathon, having won the competition with a timing of 2:17:26. She was ranked second all-time in the world for the half marathon and tenth all-time for the marathon, respectively. Yehualaw, the youngest female winner of the London Marathon, claimed her maiden victory in a World Marathon Major at the 2022 London Marathon on October 2, 2022.
In Castellon in February 2022, Yehualaw surpassed the previous women’s 10 km record, clocking in at 29:14. Only two athletes have been able to run the 10,000m on a track faster than her: her compatriot Letesenbet Gidey, who now holds the world record with a time of 29:01:03 and Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands, who recorded a time of 29:06.82. Yehualaw had intended to beat the world record at last year’s 10K Valencia. But, a positive Covid-19 test excluded her. The Ethiopian superstar made a stunning marathon debut in Hamburg in April, setting the fastest time ever for a debutant there of 2:17:23. She made her final appearance in the year 2022 at the London Marathon in October, when she also won in another record of 2:17:26.
She started winning track competitions at school when she was 12 years old, and she later won youth track championships in her extremely competitive area. With victories on the track, road, and cross country, she was invited to attend the Ethiopian Youth Sport Academy in Addis Abeba, where she now resides. Four years later, she was selected to join the NN Running Team coached by Tessema Abshero. Yehualaw, who was 19 years old then, won the Rabat Half Marathon in Morocco in April 2019 when she made her international debut. She has two medals at the World Half Marathon Championships including gold in Team race and a bronze medal in the half marathon event. Apart from this, she also won the African Games in 2019.
