Seb Coe, also known as Sebastian Newbold Coe, Baron Coe, CH, KBE, Hon FRIBA (born September 29, 1956), is a British politician and former track and field athlete. Coe was a middle-distance runner who captured four Olympic medals, including 1500 m golds in 1980 and 1984.
In middle-distance track events, he established nine outdoor and three indoor world records, including three in a row in 1979. His 800-meter world record from 1981 stood until 1997 without being beaten. For a large portion of the 1980s, middle-distance racing was dominated by Coe’s clashes with fellow Britons Steve Ovett and Steve Cram. Following his retirement from competitive athletics, Coe served as a Conservative member of parliament for Falmouth and Camborne in Cornwall from 1992 to 1997.
On May 16, 2000, he was appointed a Life Peer. He oversaw the successful London 2012 Olympic bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics, rising to the position of chairman of the London Olympic Organising Committee. Sebastian Newbold Coe was chosen to serve as the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) vice president in 2007. In 2011, he was chosen to serve a second four-year term. He was chosen as the IAAF’s president in August 2015.
Coe, who had been an undergraduate at Loughborough University, was named pro-chancellor there in 2012. He is also a member of the university’s governing committee. He was one of 24 athletes honored as the IAAF Hall of Fame’s first inductees.
