The current Olympic Champion in the high jump (2020) is Mutaz Essa Barshim, a Qatari track and field athlete was born on 24 June 1991. With a personal best of 2.43, he is also the current World Champion and the second-highest jumper in history. At the 2017 World Championships in London and the 2019 World Championships in Doha, he took home the gold medal. Mutaz Essa Barshim first collected all four Olympic medals, taking home bronze at the London 2012 Summer Olympics. He collected silver at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, and a joint gold at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.

Barshim won the high jump gold medal at the 2011 Asian Athletics Championships and the 2011 Military World Games. He was the 2010 Asian Indoor and World Junior Champion. Barshim now holds the high jump Asian record. Due to the original gold medalist’s disqualification, his bronze from the 2012 Summer Olympics was upgraded to silver in a tie for second place in 2021. In Doha, Barshim was born to a Sudanese family. He has a sister and five brothers. With the exception of Meshaal Barsham, who went on to play football goalkeeping, practically all of the Barshim children were involved in track and field since their father was also a track and field athlete. In his early years, Barshim tried long leaping and sprinting. He stated, “I grew up, nothing remarkable, like any kid in Qatar, in an IAAF interview. My father used to occasionally take me with him to the club training, so I joined the club because of that. I was familiar with sports because of my father. He learnt English while attending an Arabic school in Doha.
