Hugues Fabrice Zango, a Burkinabe athlete who specializes in the triple jump and the long jump, was born on June 25, 1993. He holds the current triple jump world record indoor with a jump of 18.07 m (59 ft 3+1/4 in) established in 2021. He also won the triple jump gold medal in the 2023 World Championships. At the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, he set the African triple jump record and became the first person from Burkina Faso to win an Olympic medal, taking home a bronze.
Zango took part in the triple jump competition in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and won the bronze medal as Burkina Faso’s first-ever Olympic medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. Additionally, he has participated in a Jeux de la Francophonie, two Summer Universiades, two African Games, two African athletics championships, and World Championships.
In the triple jump event at the 2013 Summer Universiade, Zango made his debut in a major international athletics event. His best leap in the qualifying round was 15.74 meters, which qualified him for the final. Zango placed sixth in the final with a leap of 15.96 meters. His leap was 1.05 meters shorter than that of gold medallist Viktor Kuznyetsov of Ukraine and 61 centimeters shorter than that of bronze medalist Yevgeniy Ektov of Kazakhstan.
