Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, is hosting the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships 2023 from July 6 to July 9. This prestigious event stands as the national championships in track and field for the USA, organized by USA Track & Field (USATF). Concurrently, the USATF Junior Championships 2023 will also take place at the same venue from July 7 to July 9.
These championships hold special significance as they play a pivotal role in determining the participants for various upcoming international tournaments. These include the World Athletics Championships 2023 scheduled in Budapest, and the Pan American Games 2023 set in Santiago, Chile. Moreover, they will influence the selection for the Pan American U20 Athletics Championships 2023 and the NACAC U18 and U23 Championships 2023 in Athletics.
The top three athletes in each category who meet the World standard or are in the World Athletics ranking quota will secure a place on Team USA for the World Athletics Championships. If a leading athlete doesn’t meet the standard or opts to withdraw, their spot will be filled by the next highest finishing athlete who meets the standard. The final roster for the World Championship, based on these selection criteria, is anticipated to be announced by USATF in July 2023.
In the women’s 100m, the two athletes to keep an eye on are Melissa Jefferson, who dashed her way to a surprise victory last year, and Sha’Carri Richardson, who has clocked the fastest American time in 2023 at 10.76 seconds. Moving to the women’s 200m, Abby Steiner is defending her title and Gabby Thomas, the Olympic bronze medalist, has been in blistering form this year, with a best time of 22.05 seconds.
In the women’s 400m, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Britton Wilson emerge as the favorites, especially as Athing Mu has opted for the 1,500m, leaving the field open for new contenders. In the women’s 800m, Ajee’ Wilson, with her impressive performance, and Raevyn Rogers, the Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist, are the athletes to watch as they vie for the top spot. Turning to the 400m hurdles, Dalilah Muhammad, a former world record holder, takes center stage, although Shamier Little is a strong competitor with a season-best of 53.38 seconds.
The pole vault will feature an exciting contest between Katie Moon, an Olympic and world champion, and Sandi Morris, the defending champion, as they both vie for national glory. In the women’s shot put, Chase Ealey’s dominance in 2022 makes her a strong contender, but Maggie Ewen, with her stunning throw at the USATF Los Angeles GP, is also one to watch. In discus throwing, Valarie Allman stands tall as the American record holder, Olympic champion, and four-time reigning U.S. champion, with her sights set on a world title.
For the men’s 100m, Noah Lyles, Marvin Bracy-Williams and Trayvon Bromell are the ones to watch, with 2019 world champion Christian Coleman also in the mix, setting the stage for a gripping contest. In the men’s 200m, the electrifying trio of Fred Kerley, Kenny Bednarek, and Erriyon Knighton promise a thrilling face-off, each bringing remarkable speed and finesse to the track. While, in the 1500m, Yared Nuguse is the one to beat, having set American indoor records, but he faces stiff competition from reigning champion Cooper Teare and Hobbs Kessler, both of whom have impressive personal bests.
In the men’s 5000m, Grant Fisher is the reigning champion and holds the American record, but will face fierce competition from Woody Kincaid and Abdihamid Nur, who have both been in top form. Lastly, the men’s shot put is an event not to miss, with Ryan Crouser, Joe Kovacs, and Josh Awotunde, the trio who swept the podium last year returning to compete in what promises to be an exciting contest.
The live streaming of the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships 2023 will be available on the USATF.tv or on CNBC/Peacock. It won’t be telecast on NBC for the first time ever since 2006.
