Ryan Crouser is a shot putter and discus thrower from the United States. He holds the Olympic record and is a two-time gold medal winner at the Olympics. Crouser currently holds both the indoor and outdoor shot put world records. Crouser has thrown eight of the top 12 outdoor shot puts of all time as of September 2022. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, he won gold in the shot put, setting an Olympic Games record of 22.52 meters. At the Tokyo Olympics 2020, he successfully defended his Olympic title while raising the bar by running a 23.30 m. His six competitive throws at the Tokyo 2020 all beat his previous 2016 Summer Olympics Record.

Junior Career

Ryan Crouser set a national sophomore record in 2009 during his sophomore year at Sam Barlow High School in Gresham, Oregon, with a throw of 61.72 meters in the 3.58 lb (1.62 kg) high school discus. Until Sam Crouser broke it the following year, the mark was also the high school state record in Oregon. Crouser qualified for the IAAF World Youth Championships in Bressanone, Italy in both the 5 kg shot and the 1.5 kg discus after winning both events at the 2009 national youth championships. He clinched gold in the shot put in Bressanone and silver in the discus, setting a new championship record in the fifth round with a throw of 21.56 meters.

The year 2014 saw Crouser capture his first NCAA indoor shot put championship after throwing 21.21 meters and winning by nearly four feet. He temporarily held the outdoor world record after upgrading his personal best to 21.27 m on March 28 at the Texas Relays. He achieved new meeting records and personal bests at the Big 12 outdoor championships in the shot put and discus with throws of 21.39 meters and 63.90 meters, respectively. He broke 70 feet for the first time with the 16 lb (7.26 kg) shot. At the 2014 NCAA outdoor championships, Crouser won the shot put event for the second time in a row with a throw of 21.12 meters. However, he had also hurt his foot in the meantime.

Crouser finished second to Stipe Žunić in the NCAA indoor championships in 2015, achieving 20.93 meters in his best effort. He worsened an earlier thumb injury at the championships, ruining his prospects of earning a third straight NCAA outdoor championship. In the shot and the discus, he came in fifth place. Crouser, a fifth-year senior, earned his second collegiate indoor gold with a put of 21.28 meters at the 2016 Big 12 Indoor Championships after throwing a personal best of 21.73 meters due to red-shirting the 2013 indoor season. Crouser placed second behind Tom Walsh of New Zealand on the 2016 world indoor list.

Senior Career

Just before the 2016 United States Olympic Trials, Crouser raised his personal best in the shot to 21.85 m. On the yearly list, this throw was second in the United States, eleven inches behind then-reigning World Champion Joe Kovacs. At the Olympic Trials, Crouser threw a 22.11 m on his second attempt in the finals to not only defeat Kovacs but also move up to the position of number 18 in the list of all-time best throws. Crouser improved his personal best and placed third on the all-time list, a few weeks later in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. In the fifth round, he broke the Olympic Record with a huge personal best throw of 22.52 m.

Crouser threw 22.60m inside in 2020, making him the second-best performer in world indoor history, trailing Randy Barnes’ record of 22.66m by 6 cm. Crouser broke the world indoor shot put record at Fayetteville, Arkansas, with his first throw of 2021, throwing 22.82 meters. Randy Barnes had established the 22.66 m prior indoor world mark in 1989. On June 18, 2021, Crouser threw a new world record in the shot put at the 2020 United States Olympic Trials.

Crouser won his second consecutive Olympic gold medal on August 5, 2021, in Tokyo. He improved the Olympic record from 22.52 m, which he set after winning the gold medal in the shot put at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, to 23.30 m while defending his Olympic championship. In the competition, Crouser’s six throws all beat his previous 2016 Olympic Record. Crouser was voted the 2021 World Male Athlete of the Year by Track & Field News. He received the Jesse Owens Award, the highest honor given by USA Track & Field. He was also a finalist for the World Athletics Male Track and Field Athlete title of the Year in 2021.
