Extinction Rebellion has recently been outspoken in its calls for climate change action. The organization has also vowed to prevent the marathon from being interrupted. Around 750,000 people are anticipated to attend the event. Brasher also stated that he planned to meet members of Just Stop Oil, a group that caused trouble at the World Snooker Championship, within the next 24 hours.

Extinction Rebellion noted in a statement that the charities and causes supported by the runners are devoted to fighting climate change and that in an emergency, everyone must find a way to share the streets. The organization claimed that its goal was to hold the administration accountable rather than to interfere with the event. The action was taken after animal rights demonstrators caused the Grand National to be postponed while 118 people were arrested by the police. The World Snooker Championship was disrupted on Monday by a Just Stop Oil protester who climbed up on a table and painted the green playing surface orange.
