Sir Mohamed Muktar Jama Farah, whose birth name is Hussein Abdi Kahin, is a British distance runner of Somalian descent. Popularly known as Mo Farah, he won gold medals in the 5,000 m and 10,000 m races at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics. In addition to Lasse Virén, he is the second athlete to win the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at consecutive Olympic Games. He also accomplished the 'distance double' at the World Athletics Championships in 2013 and 2015. He was the first athlete to successfully defend both distance titles in the two most important international competitions, a feat termed the 'quadruple-double.'

Junior Career

Farah had ambitions of playing association football (soccer), but his sports teacher, who drove him to club practices, encouraged him to take up running. He joined West London’s Borough of Hounslow Athletics Club. In 1996, he finished ninth in his debut English school’s cross-country championships while representing Hounslow, but the following year he won the race which was the first of his five school titles.

Athlete philanthropist Eddie Kulukundis supported Farah because he saw potential in him and covered the legal fees necessary to complete his naturalization as a British citizen. This allowed him to enter contests without having to obtain a visa. Farah won his first major victory in the 5000m in the European Athletics Junior Championships 2001 when he began training at St Mary’s University in Twickenham. Before turning into a full-time athlete, he resided and trained at the college and completed a few modules of an entry course.

Senior Career

Farah ran the 5000 m in 13 minutes 9.40 seconds in July 2006, becoming Britain’s second-fastest runner after Dave Moorcroft. Farah won silver at the European Championships 5000m in Gothenburg a month later. Farah competed in the 5000 m for the United Kingdom at the World Championships 2007 in Osaka, Japan. Farah came in sixth place with a timing of 13:47.54. With a time of 7 minutes 40.99 seconds in Glasgow, Farah broke John Mayock’s previous record for the 3000 meters indoors in January 2009. A few weeks later, at the UK Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham, he broke his own record by more than six seconds, finishing in 7 minutes 34.47 seconds.

Farah’s 2011 season began on January 8 in the Edinburgh Cross Country, when he defeated the top four finishers from that year’s European Championships to claim the tough race. Farah made a huge breakthrough on the world scene in 2011 by winning the silver medal in the 10,000 m and subsequently the gold medal in the 5000 m at the World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, South Korea. He scripted history by becoming the first British male to medal in either distance at a World Championship. Farah won the 10,000 m gold medal in a timing of 27:30.42 at the London 2012 Olympics on August 4, 2012. This was the first 10,000 m gold medal won by Great Britain in the Olympics.

In 2013, Farah continued his winning ways by winning gold in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter races at the World Championships. He won both of his signature events at the European Championships the following year and achieved the same at the World Championships in 2015. He took gold in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter events at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, making history by becoming just the second person (after Finland’s Lasse Virén) to win those events in back-to-back Olympics. Farah then won gold in the 10,000 meters and silver in the 5,000 meters at the 2017 World Championships. He shifted his concentration from track events to marathon running soon after the championships.
