The Stockholm Diamond League 2023 is set to unfold on June 2nd at the recently upgraded track of the Stockholm Olympic Stadium in Sweden. This event signifies the seventh phase of the 2023 Diamond League series, following the completion of the sixth leg in Lausanne on June 30, 2023. The Stockholm meet will showcase a total of fourteen Diamond League events – eight for men and six for women, with each event offering Diamond League points to its participants. Owing to its importance, the competition, also recognized as BAUHAUS-Galan 2023, stands as a significant stop for the athletes. With less than a few hours to go for the event to kick off, let’s take a look at the top five athletes to watch out for in the Stockholm Diamond League 2023.

Soufiane El Bakkali (Event – Men’s 3000m Steeplechase)

In the 2023 Rabat Diamond League, Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali, the reigning Tokyo Olympic champion, showcased a brilliant performance as he shattered his own personal best and the meeting record. He clocked an impressive personal best time of 7 minutes and 56.69 seconds. This feat is now the eighth fastest timing ever in the 3000m steeplechase. However, now El Bakkali has his sights set on creating a new chapter in history by aiming to destroy the world record during the Diamond League meet in Stockholm. The current world record is in the name of Lamecha Girma with a breathtaking time of 7 minutes and 52.11 seconds which he achieved at the 2023 Paris Diamond League.

Armand Duplantis (Event – Men’s Pole Vault)

Armand Duplantis, popularly known as Mondo, put forth a remarkable performance at the Ostrava Golden Spike 2023 that took place recently, where he managed a 6.12m clearance. With such a performance under his belt, all eyes will be on Duplantis as he takes part in the Stockholm Diamond League 2023. It’s worth remembering that he holds the meeting record from the previous year, with a 6.16m clearance. His primary objective will be to improve this record as he features in the men’s pole vault competition. Mondo also boasts the titles of both the reigning Olympic and World Champion and also holds the world record with an incredible 6.22m clearance.

Karsten Warholm (Event – Men’s 400m Hurdles)

Karsten Warholm, the reigning Olympic champion, kicked off his outdoor season on a high note with an impressive 46.62 at the Oslo Diamond League. As he gears up for the Stockholm Diamond League 2023, Warholm is expected to continue his dominance and is deemed the frontrunner among the competitors. In addition to his Olympic laurels, Warholm’s career boasts being a two-time World champion, two-time Diamond League winner, and the holder of the world record in the event.

Marie-Josee Ta Lou (Event – Women’s 200m)

At the Lausanne Diamond League 2023, Marie-Josee Ta Lou won the women’s 100m in an impressive 10.88 seconds, marking her third consecutive Diamond League triumph and her sixth time clocking sub-11.00 seconds wind-legal this season. Despite her win, Ta Lou expressed her thirst for an even better performance as she stated in an interview that the stadium conditions in Lausanne held her back from an even swifter run. Fans are eagerly waiting for her next appearance at the Stockholm leg of the Diamond League 2023, where she will compete in the women’s 200 meters. This time, though, she is up against a formidable opponent in Dina Asher-Smith, the world champion hailing from Great Britain, making the challenge more daunting.

Kristjan Čeh (Event – Men’s Discus Throw)

This season, world champion Kristjan Čeh has performed phenomenally, being one of the most dominant athletes in the men’s discus throw. He has won all the Diamond League 2023 meetings so far. However, he will face strong opposition from home favorite Daniel Stahl, who he lost against in the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland. However, in the next meeting itself, Kristjan claimed victory over Stahl at the Heino Lipp Memorial 2023 and attained a personal best of 71.86m.
