Armand Duplantis smashed his own pole vault world record on Saturday, leaping 6.22 meters to increase his previous mark by one centimeter at the All-Star Perche, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Silver competition in Clermont-Ferrand, France. Renaud Lavillenie, the 2012 Olympic pole vault champion, is in charge of organizing the competition. The 23-year-old Olympic gold medalist knocked the bar in his first two attempts at the height. However, on the third attempt, he cleared it with plenty of room, earning a cheer as the fans went into a whirlwind of joy. On his route to capturing the gold medal at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, he shattered the previous world record.

Duplantis, the Swedish-American pole vaulter, began the competition at 5.71m and cleared it on his first attempt. Before winning the tournament by clearing 6.01m on his first attempt and having the bar raised to a record height, he managed 5.81m and 5.91m on his second attempt. It was Duplantis’ sixth world record-breaking performance. Overall, it was his 60th leap over 6.00m in his career. He first broke the record at Torun, Poland, in February 2020, clearing 6.17 meters to surpass Lavillenie’s previous mark of 6.16 meters, which had stood since 2014.

Here is what Mondo Duplantis had to say

The reigning World and Olympic champion record holder, Armand Duplantis, said, “When you have moments like this when the energy is so high, and you are going down there for the record, it feels like levitating, it feels like my body never even touched the ground the whole jump.” “Each world record feels like it brings something a bit different out of me. Maybe the first one might have been a bit crazier, but this might be number two right now, it’s really unbelievable. The pressure doesn’t really feel the same anymore to me. I’ve proved a lot the past few years, the past two years especially, and I know what kind of jumper I am, what I am capable of. I know that I am deserving to be in the spot that I am,” he added.
