Ryan Crouser, a two-time Olympic champion, shattered his own shot put world record with a throw of 23.38 meters on February 18, 2023, at the Simplot Games in Pocatello, Idaho. The 30-year-old American’s performance in the first round of competition at the Simplot Games exceeded both his outdoor record of 23.37m set at the US Olympic Trials in Eugene in 2021 and his indoor record of 22.82m set earlier that year. According to a post on the World Athletics website, the current world champion has now gone over the 23-meter mark in seven different events throughout his career. Only three other athletes in history have ever broken beyond this barrier (23).

The world and Olympic champion extended his personal best by one centimeter at the Holt Arena while competing in the shot put exhibition event. A week ago, he began his campaign with 22.58 meters at the Millrose Games in New York. Crouser’s previous best was a 23.37m outdoor throw at the US Olympic Trials in Eugene in June 2021, and his prior best indoors was a 22.82m throw in Fayetteville that January. In order to achieve more rotational power, the 30-year-old has been testing a new approach in competition. The technique is intended to build up more momentum and expand his radius. Crouser’s new method comprises relocating his starting point to the right and including an extra step into the spin. However, his 23.38m performance in Pocatello came from a static start rather than his new throwing technique. This implies that he would aim to go much further as he perfects his new throwing style.

The Holt Arena at Idaho State University hosted the 43rd edition of the Simplot Games from February 16 to 18, 2023. Since its inception in 1979, the annual competition sponsored by the J.R. Simplot Company has evolved to become one of the top high school indoor track and field competitions in the country. The Simplot Games are distinctive because they are an open meet, which means competitors do not have to reach a predetermined qualifying time or distance. The Games are open to everyone, giving high school athletes from around the world the opportunity to compete, have fun and gain exposure. It genuinely transforms Simplot Games into a remarkable experience for everyone.

What Crouser stated post his triumph

After smashing the world record once again, here is what Ryan Crouser had to say. “The biggest surprise of my career so far. Wasn’t expecting a 23.38m today. After opening with 22.58m last weekend at Millrose traveled straight to Pocatello. Training this week was a bit frustrating, just struggling with feeling flat and a bit under the weather. Decided to take Thursday and Friday off from training. I’d never taken two rest days in a row before a meet until today, but figured it was better than overtraining. Opened with a 23.38m and had some really solid throws in the later rounds but just couldn’t get a solid release on the ball (my shot got impounded after round 1 to be certified and so I was throwing a hard shell which I struggle to connect with on the finish and so don’t throw often). All I can say is that if things are rough, try to stay positive and you might surprise yourself!,” he stated.
