Given her prior disqualification, Sha’Carri Richardson‘s achievement was extremely noteworthy. She failed a marijuana drug test in 2021, which resulted in her disqualification from the United States Olympic trials. She skipped the Tokyo Olympics because she had used the medicine to deal with the death of her biological mother. She also failed to meet the requirements to represent the United States in the world championships last summer. But her victory at the Miramar Invitational demonstrated that she is back and prepared for her face off against the best.

Richardson’s win was even more impressive considering the strong field that she was up against. She was up against Melissa Jefferson and TeeTee Terry, two athletes who placed in the top three at the last U.S. championships. Terry finished a distant second in 10.83 seconds, while no other women in the A final broke 11 seconds. In the women’s 100-meter race, she threw her arms in the air during the final few meters of the Miramar Invitational to express her joy and delight.
