Sha'Carri Richardson is a track and field sprinter from the United States who competes in the 100 and 200 metres. Richardson gained recognition as a freshman at Louisiana State University in 2019, breaking the 100 m record in 10.75 seconds at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championships. At the age of 19, she became one of the ten quickest women in history owing to her winning time at the event.  Richardson achieved a new personal best of 10.72 seconds in April 2021, becoming the seventh-fastest woman of all time and the fourth-fastest American woman in history. She won the women's 100-meter race at the US Olympic Trials in 10.86, which earned her a spot in the 2020 Summer Olympics.

She won the US Olympic Trials with a timing of 10.86, fulfilling her dream of becoming an international athlete. Richardson tested positive for cannabis consumption just before the 100 m final at the US Trials, invalidating her victory and barring her from racing in the 100 m at the Olympics. She agreed to a one-month suspension of eligibility following successful completion of a counselling programme that began on June 28, 2021. At the Prefontaine Classic in 2021, Richardson made a comeback to the track and finished ninth with a time of 11.14 seconds.

Junior Career

As a teenager, she won the 100 m title at the AAU Junior Olympics, the greatest national multi-sport event for youngsters in the United States, in 2016, and another title at the USATF Junior Olympics in 2017. She made her international debut at the 2017 Pan American U20 Athletics Championships, where she won gold with Gabriele Cunningham, Rebekah Smith, and Tara Davis in the 4 X 100-meter relay. She attended Louisiana State University and joined the LSU Lady Tigers track and field team. She was a finalist in both the 60-meter sprint and the 200-meter events at the 2019 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships as a college athlete. Four days after the NCAA Championships, she revealed that she will forego her first year of collegiate eligibility and pursue a professional deal. Former Olympic sprinter Dennis Mitchell is her coach.

Senior Career

At the 2020 US Olympic Trials, Richardson ran the 100 meters in 10.86 seconds to earn a spot in the 2020 Summer Olympics. It was 0.13 seconds quicker than Javianne Oliver, who finished second. However, a urine sample she provided tested positive for THC metabolites, indicating recent cannabis usage and casting doubt on her participation in the Tokyo Olympics. She accepted a one-month suspension from the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) that began on June 28, 2021, after successfully completing a counselling program. While Richardson was ineligible for the Olympic 100 meters due to her suspension expiring on July 27, 2021, she may have competed in the Women’s 4 x 100 relay on August 5, 2021. She was not chosen, though, and thus missed the Olympics altogether. Richardson revealed that she used the substance to deal with the stress of qualifying for the Olympics while also grieving the recent death of her biological mother.
