Sha’Carri Richardson is widely considered as one of the most promising young athletes. Her grandmother played a significant part in her childhood and inspired her to become an athlete. Richardson was born on March 25, 2000, in Dallas, Texas. She joined the LSU Lady Tigers track and field team after enrolling at Louisiana State University. From an early age, her talent on the track was apparent. The sprinter has a distinctive way of sprinting. Her career was boosted by her victory in the 100-meter race at the 2016 AAU Junior Olympics. Richardson was the 2017 USA Track & Field Junior Championships’ emerging athlete winner. She went on to win the gold medal at the 2017 Pan American U20 Athletics Championships.
The turning point in her career occured when she won the 100-meter race at the 2019 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She also came in second in the 200-meter competition. She went on to become a professional in order to compete in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Her breakthrough came when she set the sixth-fastest time in women’s 100-meter history with a timing of 10.72 seconds and became the fourth-fastest American sprinter in the country’s history.
Her desire of becoming an international athlete was achieved when she recorded a timing of 10.86 in the US Olympic Trials. Just before she was about to compete in the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Richardson tested positive for the consumption of cannabis at the 100 m final at the U.S. Trials, thus invalidating her victory and disqualifying her from competing in the 100 m at the Olympics. She consented to a one-month suspension of eligibility following satisfactory completion of a counselling programme, which started on June 28, 2021. At the Prefontaine Classic in 2021, Richardson made a comeback and finished eighth with a time of 11.14 seconds.
