Athletics: Racers Grand Prix 2023 to feature Lyles, Jackson, Amusan, and Van Niekerk

The Racers Grand Prix will resume on June 3, 2023, at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, after a three-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 150 athletes from around the globe will compete in the event, including well-known athletes like the reigning 200m world champions Noah Lyles and Shericka Jackson. 

The World Athletics Tour-Gold meet, which will feature 12 events spread across three and a half hours, is expected to be an exciting one. Tobi Amusan of Nigeria, the current 100-meter hurdles world champion and record holder, South Africa’s Wayde Van Niekerk, the Olympic winner and 400-meter world record holder, and Britain’s Zharnel Hughes, the 200-meter European champion, are among the interesting athletes scheduled to compete.

Future sprinting superstars from Jamaica, including World Athletics Championship finalist Oblique Seville, World Junior Champions Tina Clayton, and Kerrica Hill, and National Under-20 100m record holder Bouwahjgie Nkrumie, will also be on show. The 2019 World Championship gold medalist Tajay Gayle and the silver medalists Shanieka Ricketts and Fedrick Dacres will compete in field events to display their abilities.

What the Racers Track Club President and Head Coach had to say

At the official launch of the meet at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, Racers Track Club President and Head Coach Glen Mills showed his enthusiasm about the event’s return. He stated, “It is a meet you don’t want to miss. Three-and-a-half hours of pulsating action in 12 events.” Mills, who also serves as director for the meet, highlighted the high standard and quality of the event, saying, “Over the four years of staging the Grand Prix, the standard and quality has been unquestionable, and the meet has had some of the greatest athletes in track and field taking part here in Jamaica.”

The 12 events set to take place are the 100m (Men and Women), 200m (Men), 400m (Men and Women), 400m hurdles (Women), 100m hurdles (Women), 110m hurdles (Men), Triple Jump (Women), High Jump (Women), Long Jump (Men), and Discus (Men). The meet is scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm Jamaica time (7:30 pm Ecuador Time) and is a must-watch for fans of Athletics worldwide. 

The reintroduction of the Racers Grand Prix is significant for the nation, which is known to have produced some of the world’s top sprinters. The COVID-19 epidemic had disrupted international athletic events. The Racers Grand Prix was also one of the events that were impacted. This event is a World Athletics Tour-Gold competition. Top athletes from all around the world are expected to compete, so spectators can look forward to an exciting exhibition of athleticism.
