Peru has withdrawn from hosting the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Lima from August 26 to 31, 2024. This was owing to the recent political instability, social turmoil, and natural disasters that have rendered the country unable to host the event. The announcement was made by World Athletics who stated on Wednesday. The Peruvian Athletics Federation informed the federation that the nation would not be able to host the competition. In a statement, World Athletics announced that it has already begun talks with a potential substitute host for the event the following year and that more details will be released very soon.

Following the ouster of former President Pedro Castillo and the installation of his vice, Dina Boluarte, Peru has been shaken by protests and turmoil for the past two months. At least eight people were killed last month when Cyclone Yaku made landfall in Peru’s northern region, bringing with it torrential rains that buried homes and vehicles in soil.

What the statement from the Peruvian Federation and World Athletics say

“Due to circumstances beyond its control, Lima has withdrawn as the host city of the 2024 World Athletics Under-20 Championships,” the statement read. “The Peruvian Athletics Federation has informed World Athletics that recent political instability and social unrest, as well as natural disasters in Peru, have left the federation and the local organizing committee unable to stage the event next year. We would like to thank the Peruvian Federation and the Local Organizing Committee for the time and effort they have already put into this event,” said World Athletics.

FIFA, the governing body of football, has also removed Peru’s eligibility to host the U-17 World Cup. The choice was decided as a result of Peru’s failure to fulfill infrastructural promises prior to the competition. The COVID-19 pandemic forced FIFA to postpone the competition in 2021, hence the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup will be the tournament’s 19th iteration. The last edition of the competition took place in 2019 when Brazil was crowned the champion.

The Local Organizing Committee and the Peruvian Federation received praise from the World Athletics for the time and work they had already put into the event. The organization is also aware that it was out of the country’s control what happened to force the cancellation of the event. Every two years, the Under-20 World Championships in athletics are a major competition that draws participants from all around the world. For the Peruvian Athletics Federation, which was hoping to put on a good event, the decision to cancel the hosting of the event will also be disappointing. The search for a new host city for the World Athletics event will be a top priority for the organization as it works to make sure that everything goes as planned.
