World Athletics Indoor Championships 2024: Entry Standards, Qualifying Process and More

The World Athletics Indoor Championships 2024 in Glasgow has unveiled its qualification system, with the Scottish city of Glasgow preparing to host the event at the Emirates Arena from Friday, March 1 to Sunday, March 3, 2024. Glasgow, which previously hosted the European Indoor Championships in 2019, will once again be the stage for top athletes to compete in a variety of indoor events. Several pathways are available for athletes to qualify for individual events, including achieving the entry standard, securing a World Indoor Tour wild card as the overall event winner in either the 2023 or 2024 World Indoor Tours, or through their world ranking position, which will help to reach the target number of athletes for each event.

No more than two male and two female athletes from any one member nation will receive invitations for the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2024. If any athletes decline or cancel their invitations, the next highest-ranked athletes on the same lists will be invited, adhering to the conditions outlined above. Once the qualification period ends, World Athletics will evaluate the number of athletes entered for each event, excluding relays and combined events, based on the following criteria: qualification by entry standard, qualification by wild card, and accepted unqualified entries.

For the pentathlon and heptathlon events at, which will consist of 12 athletes each, the selection process will follow a specific formula. The 2023 World Athletics Combined Events Tour winners, the top five athletes from the 2023 world outdoor lists (with a maximum of one athlete per country), the top five athletes from the 2024 world indoor lists, and one additional athlete chosen by World Athletics will comprise the field.

World Athletics Indoor Championships 2024: Entry Standards

In cases where the target number of entries has not been met, World Athletics will identify and confirm qualified athletes based on their World Rankings position as of February 18, with the goal of reaching the established target number while respecting the maximum quota for each member federation per event.
