Armand Duplantis eyes third title at the FBK Games 2023

Armand “Mondo” Duplantis of Sweden has declared his participation in the FBK Games, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting taking place on June 4th in Hengelo. The world and Olympic champion Duplantis is seeking his third victory at the Fanny Blankers-Koen Stadium after setting a meeting mark of 6.10m there in 2021. Only Sergey Bubka in outdoor events had a jump higher than this one that had ever been recorded in the Netherlands.

Duplantis will join a talented group that includes Femke Bol, the current world indoor 400-meter record holder, and Lieke Klaver, both Dutch by origin. In addition to Duplantis, Bol and Klaver, the other big names who have confirmed their participation are Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse, Olympic 1500m gold medalist Faith Kipyegon of Kenya, and Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith, the reigning European champion in the 100m and 200m.

Armand Duplantis is eager to return to the FBK Games, where he has had great success and enjoyed the enthusiastic support of the crowd. He stated, “The crowd in the grandstands always cheers me on, creating this amazing atmosphere that gives me extra energy. I can’t wait to return and experience it all again.” He also noted the excellent conditions at the stadium, saying, “The FBK Stadium is a place where you can really deliver and jump high, so I am looking forward to seeing what I can do in Hengelo this year.”

About the FBK Games

The FBK Games is a popular annual athletics event in Hengelo, Netherlands that draws many of the world’s top athletes. The games are a tribute to Fanny Blankers-Koen who claimed four gold medals at the Summer Olympics 1984 in London, United Kingdom. It was originally held in 1981. Three world records have been attained in the history of the FBK Games by Sifan Hassan in the women’s 10000m (2021), Kenenisa Bekele in the men’s 5000m (2004), and Haile Gebrselassie in the women’s 10000m (1998).

Achievements of Mondo Duplantis

Duplantis is one of the most exciting young talents in athletics, having already established numerous world records and claimed several major titles in recent years. Mondo Duplantis is a Swedish-American pole vaulter who holds the world outdoor (6.21) and indoor records (6.22m). In addition, he is the reigning World outdoor and indoor champion and also holds the European and Diamond League titles. 

Mondo Duplantis had cleared six metres or higher 60 times as of February 2023, more than any other athlete in history. Duplantis was named the European and World Male Athlete of the Year for his 2022 campaign, which saw him break three world records, win the World outdoor and indoor titles, the European and Diamond League championship, and clear six meters or more 22 times.
