Armand Gustav Duplantis is the full name of Armand Duplantis, who goes by the nickname “Mondo.” With jumps of 6.16 meters outside and 6.20 meters indoors, he now owns the pole vaulting world record. He currently holds the titles of World and Olympic champion. On November 10th, 1999, he was born in Lafayette, Louisiana, in the United States. Duplantis chose to represent his mother’s nation of Sweden despite being born and raised in the United States. Since then, he has won the hearts of the Swedish people not only by winning multiple awards but also by embracing the culture by learning Swedish and driving a Swedish car.

Duplantis began pole vaulting as a four-year-old at his family’s house in Lafayette, Louisiana, and rapidly demonstrated his ability for the sport. With a leap of 3.86 meters, he established his first age-group world record at the age of seven. He outperformed the previous world records for ages 11 and 12 at the age of 10.  In 2018, Duplantis started the season by breaking the indoor junior world record with a jump of 5.83 meters at the Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nevada, in the United States.

On February 8, 2020, at the World Athletics Indoor Tour meeting in Torun, Poland, he broke Renaud Lavillenie’s previous record of 6.16m, which had stood since 2014. Only one week afterwards, Duplantis broke his own record by another centimetre, reaching 6.18m at the IAAF World Indoor Tour event in Glasgow, UK. Duplantis broke Sergey Bubka’s 26-year-old men’s outdoor pole vault world record with a jump of 6.15m at the Diamond League meeting in Rome in September 2020.

In the span of two weeks, Duplantis also broke his own world mark twice, first by clearing 6.19m at the World Athletics Indoor Tour competition in Belgrade, Serbia, and cleared 6.20m at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in the same city. At the 2022 World Athletics Championships, Duplantis improved upon his previous record by breaking it once more by clearing 6.21 meters.
