UK Athletics, the governing body for the sport of athletics in the United Kingdom, has disclosed the Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s squads at the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest, Hungary, which will run from August 19 to 27, 2023. The assembled team has been chosen with the strategic intention to maximize the potential for medal winners and earn numerous positions within the top eight ranks. The final team lineup will be confirmed once UK Athletics obtains the World Rankings invitations from the World Athletics in the upcoming week. Upon receipt of these invites, athletes who have satisfied the UKA qualification benchmark and demonstrated recent high-level performance will be included in the team.

As the Championships are nearing, several athletes have displayed remarkable form, with British records in 2023 being set by Keely Hodgkinson in the 800m, Zharnel Hughes in the 100m and 200m, Morgan Lake in High Jump, and Laura Muir in the one-mile category. These athletes have successfully earned their spots in the squad for the World Athletics Championships 2023.

What was the selection criteria?

To be considered for selection, athletes had to fulfill the requirements outlined in the selection policy. This included showing current form, evaluated by assessing their performance and progress since May 1, 2023. Currently, 50 athletes have been declared, which previously included only Natasha Cockram as the sole marathon runner. For the marathon at Budapest, no further selections will be made, as a considerable number of key athletes are concentrating on qualifying for the Olympics and pursuing alternative qualification opportunities in 2023.

They have demonstrated the form and ability to compete successfully on the global stage and we are looking forward to working with them as we commence preparation camp in a couple of weeks.” He also acknowledged the potential of those athletes who might have missed the cut this year and showed optimism for their challenge in the upcoming year, where the European Championships and the Olympics will occur within a span of less than six weeks.
