At the Mainova Frankfurt Marathon, a World Athletics Elite Label road race, Brimin Kipkorir Misoi and Selly Chepyego Kaptich accomplished a Kenyan double on October 30, 2022. Both competitors made a decisive break at 25km into their races, with Misoi going on to win the men’s event with a personal best of 2:06:11 and Kaptich holding on to claim the women’s championship, her maiden marathon triumph, in 2:23:11.

Despite not being one of the early favorites, Misoi ran a smart race and won by more than a minute over pacesetter Samwel Nyamai Mailu. Misoi was a part of the leading men’s group that clocked 10km in 29:52 and 15km in 44:40, with a halfway time of 1:02:58. Misoi then took the charge, breaking away from his competitors with a series of sub-2:55 kilometers. He was running sub-2:05 as he crossed 30km in 1:28:44 behind Mailu. Misoi clocked 1:43:33 for the first 35 kms, 1:59:12 for the next 40 km, and 2:06:11 for the final km, setting a personal best and the fifth-fastest winning time in Frankfurt.

In the women’s race, Kaptich ran 10km in 33:14 and 15km in 49:38, accompanied by Ethiopian duo Atalel Anmut and Yeshi Kalayu Chekole. The trio stood together when the halfway point was reached in 1:09:40. After dropping Anmut, Kaptich and Chekole completed 25 kilometers in 1:22:27, ahead by 19 seconds and at a course-record pace. Kaptich then accelerated again, leaving Chekole behind and increased the pace to pass the 30km mark in 1:38:45, more than a minute ahead. Kiprop was in second place after 35 kilometers, finishing in 1:58:15, two minutes behind Kaptich (1:56:12), with her compatriot Jackline Chepngeno a further ten seconds back. Kiprop began to reel Kaptich in, passing 40km in 2:16:28 behind Kaptich’s 2:14:42, but she couldn’t overtake her. Kaptich won in 2:23:11, followed by Kiprop in 2:24:40 and Chepngeno in 2:25:14.
