WWE superstar and current NXT champion Dolph Ziggler had no idea he was going to win the NXT title. Ziggler has been a household name in the WWE for over a decade now. Having won the World Title and the Intercontinental title, he is considered a senior member of the locker room.

So it came as a surprise when Ziggler showed up on NXT in February. He got involved in the title picture immediately. After defeating stars like Tommaso Ciampa, he was given an NXT championship match. He won the match thanks to interference from his friend, Robert Roode.

But on a recent episode of WWE’s The Bump, the showoff revealed that he had no idea that he was going to win the title. “I had no idea I was going to be NXT Champion. I didn’t plan on it. All I wanted to do was check out some new talent scout amount, see who’s got what it takes to go to the next level at some point, maybe report back, say, hey, RAW, hey, SmackDown, hey Vince McMahon, I see something and these guys, these gals, they could do something big in the future. Let me get my hands on them and next thing you know, two weeks later, I’m the NXT Champion,” Ziggler said.

Booker T backs Ziggler to develop young talent

Elsewhere, WWE Hall of Famer Booker T has put his weight behind Dolph Ziggler as he believes that superstar can be a key figure in developing young talents at NXT. The WWE legend is of the opinion that Ziggler is playing the role of player-coach currently in the developmental brand of the company.

“No doubt, Dolph Ziggler is a player-coach. That’s what I look at Dolph as. Dolph can teach those guys down there a load as far as knowledge goes that these guys could use forever. I look at a guy like Dolph Ziggler, he hasn’t lasted in WWE because he’s a crappy worker or anything like that. He hasn’t lasted in the WWE because nobody likes him. That’s not the reason why Dolph Ziggler…. he hasn’t stuck around because people like him. He’s stuck around because he’s talented and he knows exactly what his job is,” Booker T said in the Hall of Fame podcast.

“You’re never going to know what Dolph Ziggler is thinking before the match because every match has been the same since day one, and that’s going out there and doing the best job to my ability. But, whatever comes along, I’ll be prepared, like going down to NXT, winning the NXT Championship and bringing all of these guys up to a certain level that I could work with. That right there, for me, is a general,” said the legend.
