On June 16, 1959, James Brian Hellwig, aka The Ultimate Warrior, was born. He was a professional wrestler and bodybuilder from the United States. From 1987 until 1992, as well as a brief stay in 1996, he performed for the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE). He also wrestled for World Championship Wrestling (WCW) for a few months in 1998, earning the nickname “The Warrior.” Warrior transitioned to professional wrestling after a bodybuilding career.

Start as a wrestler

From 1985 to 1986, he was a member of the Blade Runners, which he formed with fellow former bodybuilder Steve Borden before splitting when Warrior departed to pursue a singles career in World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW). He was a one-time WCWA Texas Heavyweight Champion under the ring moniker Dingo Warrior. He joined the World Wrestling Federation in 1987 and won the WWF Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship twice in less than two years. Warrior defeated Hulk Hogan in a championship vs. title fight at WrestleMania VI, becoming the first wrestler to hold both belts at the same time.

Released from WWE

He was billed as the company’s new face, but he fell out with Vince McMahon over a wage issue, and wanted to quit the WWF, but was turned down. Warrior would appear at WrestleMania VIII, but he was dismissed in November 1992 because of his steroid use, which was eventually exposed. He officially changed his name to “Warrior” in 1993 and was listed as a co-writer for a comic book based on his image and moniker. Warrior made his comeback to the WWF at WrestleMania XII, but only lasted four months before no-showing events.

Retirement and Death

He joined World Championship Wrestling (who had attempted to employ him in 1995) two years later, and was involved in a much-maligned storyline with Hulk Hogan that concluded at Halloween Havoc. Warrior left professional wrestling to pursue a career as a public speaker, but he did compete in one farewell match in Spain in 2008. Warrior died on April 8, 2014, in Scottsdale, Arizona, at the age of 54. He had been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame the previous three nights in New Orleans, performed at WrestleMania XXX, and made his final public appearance on Monday Night Raw, returning to the business after an unhappy split in 1996.
