Charles Edwards Betts was born in Minnesota on March 8, 1986. He took his first significant step towards wrestling by becoming the Minnesota high school state champion in 2004 and he later got qualified for the 2012 US Olympics in 2012. Charles then made progress in the 2012 Summer Olympics, in the Greco-Roman style 84kg event. Charles won in the qualification round but was soon eliminated by Pablo Shorey of Cuba in the very next round.
Charles signed his contract with WWE in November 2013. And he was assigned to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida where he performed under the ring name Chad Gable. Chad Gable then made his actual WWE debut under the NXT brand on 5 September 5, 2014, defeating Troy McClain. He even clashed with Braun Strowman on December 19, 2014, but unfortunately lost. Later he made his TV debut against Tyler Breeze and lost.
Later in May 2015, Chad Gable started a promo with Jason Jordan where he tried to recruit him into making a new team. He finally succeeded in doing so after two months of convincing. Later Gable and Jason made their tag team debut as American Alpha on the July 15, episode of NXT. During their debut, they managed to defeat the team of Elias Samson and Steve Cutler and later participated in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament, where he beat the team of Neville and Solomon Crowe. American Alpha later faced off against Vaudevillian on the March 16, episode of NXT and won. Later they defeated Dash and Dawson to get the NXT Tag Team Championship title. But they’d soon lose their title back to Dash and Dawson on June 8.
