Mark William Calaway (born March 24, 1965, Houston, Texas, United States) is an American professional wrestler who rose to fame by portraying the role of The Undertaker on TV. Calaway was born to Frank Compton Calaway and Betty Catherine Truby. He has four elder brothers whose names are David, Michael, Paul and Timothy who passed away in 2020. In 1985, he started studying at Texas Wesleyan University where he majored in sports management and played as a center for his college basketball team in the 1985-86 season. He dropped out in 1986 and briefly considered playing basketball but decided to get into professional wrestling.

In October 1990, Calaway signed with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and was handpicked by Vince McMahon to be the main man. He officially debuted at the Survivor Series PPV where he was presented to the whole world as Ted DiBiase’s mystery partner. Then he won his first WWF championship when he beat Hulk Hogan at Survivor Series in 1991 and in the process became the youngest WWF champion. He then went on to win several titles. He won the World Heavyweight Championship (3 times), WWE Championship (4 times), Hardcore Championship (1 time), Tag Team Championship (6 times).

The Undertaker won his first Royal Rumble in 2007 and went on to challenge Batista at WrestleMania for the world title. He is also known for his undefeated WrestleMania streak which lasted for 21 years and ended in 2014 at WrestleMania 30 when he lost to Brock Lesnar. The Undertaker had his final match at WrestleMania 36 where he fought against AJ Styles in a Boneyard match which he won and signed off on a high.

The Undertaker Rivalries

The Deadman had some awesome rivalries against some of the best wrestlers. His rivalry against Hulk Hogan was the start of it all. He then went on to form the Ministry of Darkness and had iconic matches against the likes of Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Then he was also involved in a rivalry with his on-screen brother Kane that lasted for a long time and was reignited in 2004. He even formed a tag team called the Brothers of Destruction with Kane and went on to win the tag team titles.

Edge was one of the Undertaker’s best rivals as he pushed him to the limit and had five-star matches. Towards the end of his career, the Undertaker feuded with Shawn Michaels and Triple H with whom he fought at four consecutive WrestleMania’s (25, 26, 27, 28). He then had a match with CM Punk at WrestleMania 29 and then at the following WrestleMania lost to Brock Lesnar which ended his famous streak.
