Charles Wright (born May 16, 1961, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States) is an American professional wrestler who is best known for his time in the WWE under the ring name The Godfather. He worked with the WWE throughout the 1990s and early 2000s and portrayed various characters and gimmicks like Papa Shango, Kama, Kama Mustafa, and The Godfather. He is a two-time USWA Unified World Heavyweight Champion, a one-time WWF Intercontinental Champion, and a one-time WWF World Tag Team Champion. He headlined Saturday Night’s Main Event XXXI against Bret Hart for the WWF Championship. Wright was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame on April 2, 2016, as the Godfather gimmick.

Beginnings

Wright decided to become a wrestler after watching the shooting of the movie Over the Top. The wrestlers involved in the movie gave him the advice that, with his physique and unique look, he should try seeking out Larry Sharpe and his Monster Factory to get into the business. Eventually, Wright started his training into a job with Jerry Lawler in the United States Wrestling Association (USWA) with the gimmick the wrestlers from the bar had given him and took the name The Soultaker, taken from one of the tattoos on his arm. He won the USWA Unified World Heavyweight Championship on October 23, 1989. During his time in the USWA, he would also tour New Japan Pro-Wrestling in 1990.

The Godfather in WWE

Wright made his debut in WWE as Papa Shango, a voodoo practitioner inspired after the character in the 1973 film Live and Let Die. He carried a skull to the ring billowing smoke and could control arena lights allowing for strange happenings in the ring, and later could cast spells to cause opponents pain and to make them vomit from afar. The character debuted in 1992 defeating jobber Dale Wolfe. Shango was then thrust into the spotlight almost immediately, running in on the Hulk Hogan vs Sid Justice main event at WrestleMania VIII. The Ultimate Warrior then returned to by running to the ring and helping Hogan against Sid and Shango.

Return as Kama

Wright returned to the WWE in 1995 with a character change and a new name, Kama “The Supreme Fighting Machine”. He joined Ted DiBiase’s Million Dollar Corporation stable and immediately feuded with The Undertaker, stealing the Undertaker’s signature urn at April’s WrestleMania XI then having it melted down and formed into a necklace. He was taken off of television in the fall of 1995, and after an appearance in the 1996 Royal Rumble, Wright left the company again. Shortly after his departure, Wright had verbally agreed to join World Championship Wrestling to serve as the enforcer for the New World Order but chose not to go to WCW after speaking to Ron Simmons.

Intercontinental Champion

Wright had another character change and this was by far the most successful known as The Godfather. He would be constantly surrounded by girls from local strip clubs, actresses or up-and-coming female wrestlers. He would offer his opponents the right to use these girls for “any purpose” if they would forfeit the match to him. The gimmick was highly popular with audiences, and he defeated Goldust for the WWF Intercontinental Championship in 1999. On March 16, 2000, on an episode of SmackDown, he picked up the biggest win of his career, when he defeated the WWF Champion Triple H, due to interference from Shane McMahon and Big Show.

The Godfather wife

Wright has been married to Denise Wright since September 2006. Together, they have four children. He has been married two times before although not much is known about them. It surely comes as a shock to a lot of people that The Godfather has been happily married since 2006 especially because his gimmick in the WWE was that of a pimp who was always surrounded by girls from the strip clubs, bars etc. He is also a grandfather as he has a grandson. So, everything said and done, The Godfather is a family man who loves his family very much.

Who was the pimp in WWE?

The pimp character came into existence with the Godfather gimmick and it was a unique gimmick back in the time. The Godfather was one of the most entertaining wrestlers of WWE in the attitude era. Charles Wright, the man who played the role of the character actually played three different characters in WWE.

Was Lita one of the godfathers Hos?

Many members of the WWE Universe assume that Lita made her debut in 2000 when she was aligned with Essa Rios. The former four-time women’s champion actually made her debut a year earlier when she was one of The Godfather’s Ho’s on the July 4th episode of Heat and 5th episode of Raw Is War.
