Ted DiBiase in WWE

DiBiase briefly worked for Vince McMahon’s Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1979, when it was known as the World Wide Wrestling Federation. He won the brief-lived North American Championship, making him the title’s inaugural champion. On June 19, 1979, he lost the North American Championship to Pat Patterson, who combined it with the fictitious “South American Championship” to become the first Intercontinental Champion. He faced Hulk Hogan in Hulk’s debut Madison Square Garden battle.

Return to WWF/E

On May 15, 1987, DiBiase returned to the WWF as a babyface in a home event in Houston, Texas. He entered the ring to inform the audience that it was only natural that he was now participating in the WWF. The One Man Gang and Slick arrived at the ring moments later for Gang’s planned match. Before there could be a fight, the referee had to order DiBiase to leave. DiBiase would have his debut bout at the following house event on June 7 and would lose to The One Man Gang.

First vignette

DiBiase had his first segment on a June 27 edition of WWF Superstars. He’d become known as “The Million Dollar Man,” a millionaire who donned a gold-studded, dollar-sign-covered suit and, eventually, a custom-made, diamond-encrusted, and self-awarded “Million Dollar Championship” belt. The Million Dollar Man character was inspired by Vince McMahon’s desire to be a wrestler. DiBiase had a bodyguard named Virgil who was beside him during his matches and vignettes.
