Melissa Teresa Vargas Abreu, popularly known as Melissa Vargas, is a prominent volleyball player from Cuba. Currently, she represents Fenerbahçe Opet in Turkey. Her volleyball journey started with the Cuban women’s national team, where she competed in the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2014 held in Italy. In 2021, she obtained Turkish citizenship. This paved the way for her to join the Turkey women’s national volleyball team in 2023.
Born on October 16, 1999, in Cienfuegos, Cuba, Melissa Vargas has had a remarkable career with several achievements. In 2014, she received the Best Opposite award at the U23 Pan-American Cup. She has been recognized as the Best Outside Hitter at various events, including the Central American Caribbean Games in 2014, Pan American Cup and Games in 2015. She claimed the title of Best Scorer at the Final Four Cup in 2015, the NORCECA Pan American Cup Final Six in 2015, and the Champions League in 2018/2019.
Vargas earned her the Best Server title at prestigious events such as the Pan American Cup in 2015, the Turkey Volleyball Women’s League in 2018 and 2019, and the Chinese League in 2021 and 2022. Transitioning to Turkish citizenship in 2021, she waited for two years before officially joining the Turkey women’s national volleyball team. Finally, in 2023, she represented Turkey in the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League 2023.
Adding to her impressive journey, Melissa Vargas has played a pivotal role in the Turkey women’s national volleyball team’s success at the CEV Women’s European Volleyball Championship 2023. Her formidable blocking skills have contributed to Turkey’s way to the semi-finals. The Turkish team will need Vargas to give her best against defending champion Italy.
