Mayu Ishikawa was born on 14 May 2000. She is a volleyball player who competes professionally in Japan. Ishikawa has one older sister and one older brother, Yūki Ishikawa, who competes for Japan’s men’s national volleyball team. When she was in high school, her brother would frequently offer helpful tips about spiking, which inspired her to start playing volleyball. She joined the neighborhood club team Anjo Kita Rabbits when she was a third-grader at Okazaki City’s Yahagi Minami Elementary School and began playing volleyball.
She attended the well-regarded team at Nagano City Susobana Junior High School in 2013. She competed in the “National Junior High School Athletic Meet” for three years in a row in junior high school, winning twice in the first year, 2013, and the third year, 2015, respectively. Mayu competed as a representative of the national team for the first time at the 2017 Asian Girls’ U18 Volleyball Championship in China in March 2017, when she was first registered as a member of the Japan women’s national under-18 volleyball team. The Japanese team won the championship while she was the captain.
She was named team captain in her third year of high school in 2018. She defeated Kinrankai High School 3-0 in the championship game of the “2018 National High School Comprehensive Athletic Meet Volleyball Tournament” (Inter-high) that same year, earning her third tournament victory for the first time in two years. Her school had defeated Kinrankai High School with a set count of 3-1 while competing in the “73rd National Sports Festival Volleyball Competition” (Kokutai) in the fall as Tokyo’s representative. Shimokitazawa Seitoku High School now has two straight high school titles thanks to the victory. In the semi-finals of the “71st All Japan Volleyball High School Championships” (Harutaka) in January 2019, the team that challenged for the triple crown, Shimokitazawa Seitoku High School, was defeated by Higashi Kyushu Ryutani High School in a full set.
2019 Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship gold medalist Japan was presented with the same honors after the event as Mayu. Kumi Nakada, the head coach of Japan’s senior national team, assessed her performance, and as a result, she was added to the Japanese team for the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup. She was selected as a starter in the tournament’s matches against the United States and South Korea, and she led Japan in scoring in both contests.
