Innovation in the field of sports has always seen the authorities try out new and better means to amend the game. Sometimes, this includes the use of time-cutting methods to keep the tempo of the game. Going ahead with this idea only, a new method of awarding a green card has been implemented in the ongoing Volleyball Nations League Finals. The new system for rewarding fair play is getting tested during the 2023 Women’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL) Finals in July in Arlington, US. It will also be used in the men’s Nations League finals that will take place in Gdansk, Poland. For the first time in international competition, green cards will be shown to players who concede a block or net touch, helping to save time otherwise spent on video checks.

What are the implications of this green card?

The team with the most green cards received during the VNL Finals will win a $30,000 Fair Play Moment prize. In the event of a tie, the prize will be awarded to the highest-placed team in the final standings.
A fair play award of $15,000 has already been presented by FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graca F. It was awarded to the men’s team of Poland during the VNL finals of 2022. The Polish team admitted to multiple touch blocks or encroachments during last year’s against Italy in Bologna.

Future of the Green Card System

Although the Green Cards are a new thing in the Nations League competitions, it is not a completely new invention. This system has already been applied in domestic club competitions, for example in Italy and Bulgaria. The first green card was shown on 6 October 2018 by the Italian referee Andrea Puecher to Simone Giannelli. He was in Trento at that time. Simone had conceded a touch against a block in a Supercoppa semi-final against Sir Safety Conad Perugia. Authorities are hoping that like in Italy and Bulgaria, this innovation receives positive reviews in the VNL finals.

The authorities aim to implement this system across all volleyball competitions in the near future. The women’s VNL finals started on July 12th and will continue till the 16th in Arlington, USA. While the men’s VNL finals will be held in Gdansk, Poland from July 19th to 23rd. In the final phase, eight teams from each tournament will participate in a direct elimination bracket. The matches are slotted between quarterfinals, semifinals and medal matches. Let us hope that this new innovation leads us to more swift volleyball matches.
