The fifth edition of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League began its action yesterday. The Nations League is a yearly competition for international volleyball players. From May 30 to July 16, 2023, the tournament will take place. The decisive round will take held in Arlington, Texas, in the United States, at College Park Centre. Four volleyball confederations’ top 16 nations will compete in the Women’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL). It is one of the top international indoor competitions put on by the FIVB, the organisation that governs the sport. There were some minor changes post which the final roster for the tournament was made. The changes were the results of the 2022 Nations League and 2022 Challenger Cup. Australia was replaced by debutants Cuba in this edition.
Sunday will see the USA lock horns against Turkey. The USA is currently ranked in the second place while Turkey is placed in the sixth position. USA and Turkey last met in the World Championship which was scheduled after FIVB Nations League. In the last encounter, the Americans destroyed the Turkish fleet in Poland. The USA won that match in straight sets of 3-0. The Turkish side will look to put aside their last result and start their campaign with a win. The Americans on the other hand will go for the win and continue there great record in the ongoing Nations league.

Three weekly stages make up the preliminary round of the VNL 2023 women’s competition. Each week, the teams in the two pools are switched around to include all 16 teams. The top eight teams in the standings after three weeks will move on to the championship round. Each team competes in 12 games during the pool round. The last knockout round of the competition will thereafter feature eight teams. After the preliminary round is over, the teams’ rankings will be used to decide the order of the knockout stages. The preliminary stages will be conducted in the following places: Antalya, Nagoya, Hong Kong, Brasilia, Suwon and Bangkok. Preliminary rounds will continue up to the 2nd of July post which the knockout matches will begin.

Saturday featured six games Brazil and Dominican Republic, China and Netherlands, Bulgaria and Japan, Poland and Serbia, USA and Thailand, Turkey and Italy going head to head against each other in the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League Round 1. In the first game, the Brazilians came out on top at the back of a dominant performance. Brazil won against the Dominican Republic in a dominant game with a scoreline of 27-25, 20-25, 25-21 and 27-25 (3-1). In the second game, the Chinese won it easily against the Dutch side to take the game 3-1. The Chinese side won with a scoreline of 27-25, 23-25, 25-22, and 25-20. In the third game, the Japanese thrashed the Bulgarian side with a scoreline of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-19 to take the set 3-0. Similarly, the fourth match saw the Polish side give a beating to the Serbians. The scoreline was 25-18, 25-22, 30-28 to take the set 3-0. In the fifth match, Turkey defeated the defending champions with a scoreline of 25-19, 26-24, 25-19 and take the set 3-0.
The 2023 Volleyball Women’s Nations League will commence on May 30 and end on July 16.
