The 19th edition of the Golden European League is a continental volleyball competition for senior men’s national volleyball teams of Europe, organized by the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV). Created in 2004, the competition serves as a qualifying tournament for the FIVB World League (until 2016) and its successor the FIVB Challenger Cup in 2018. This event should not be confused with the other, more prestigious, continental competition for European national volleyball teams, the European Volleyball Championship.

The past head-to-head records of the Czech Republic against Estonia are Czechs have won 6 times and Estonia only 1 time, so we can well understand that Estonia is no match for Czechs. In the Golden European League, they only met for 1 time last year but the same result happened: the Czech won the match.

What is the format of the 2023 Golden European League?

12 teams per gender will once again compete in the Golden League. Teams play each other twice in the double round-robin format of the competition—once at home and once away. As in previous years, there are a lot of things up for grabs, including € 125,000 for the eventual winners in each gender and the opportunity for the two finalists in each gender to earn a spot in this summer’s 2023 FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup. And in 2024, the team that finishes last will be demoted to the Silver League. The CEV invested about € 800,000 in the European League for the 2022 edition alone; 90 matches across all four competitions resulted in more than 250 hours of live streaming and/or broadcasting.

The men’s and women’s champions from the previous Golden League, the Czech Republic and France, are back to defend their titles. The Czech Republic will begin their journey in a fiercely competitive Pool C that also includes Finland, two-time (2016 and 2018) European League champions Estonia, and Slovakia, which has won two European League championships (2008 and 2011). The highest-ranked team in the competition is the men’s national team of Türkiye, which won the title in 2019 and 2021. Croatia has offered to host the men’s Final Four in 2023 after successfully hosting the final round in 2022.
