The fifth edition of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League began its action yesterday. The Nations League is a yearly competition for international volleyball players. From May 30 to July 16, 2023, the tournament will take place. The decisive round will take held in Arlington, Texas, in the United States, at College Park Centre. Four volleyball confederations’ top 16 nations will compete in the Women’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL). It is one of the top international indoor competitions put on by the FIVB, the organisation that governs the sport. There were some minor changes post which the final roster for the tournament was made. The changes were the results of the 2022 Nations League and 2022 Challenger Cup. Australia was replaced by debutants Cuba in this edition.
Saturday will see the USA at loggerheads against South Korea. The USA is currently ranked in the fourth place while South Korea is placed in the twenty-fourth position. The USA and South Korea last met in the FIVB Nations League held back in 2021. The Americans had the last laugh in that encounter. The USA came out on top and won the match by 3-0. The Korean side will look to put aside their last result and start their campaign with a win. USA on the other hand, being one of the powerhouses of the sport will look to continue their dominant form and go on to win the finals.
Three weekly stages make up the preliminary round of the VNL 2023 women’s competition. Each week, the teams in the two pools are switched around to include all 16 teams. The top eight teams in the standings after three weeks will move on to the championship round. Each team competes in 12 games during the pool round. The last knockout round of the competition will thereafter feature eight teams. After the preliminary round is over, the teams’ rankings will be used to decide the order of the knockout stages. The preliminary stages will be conducted in the following places: Antalya, Nagoya, Hong Kong, Brasilia, Suwon and Bangkok. Preliminary rounds will continue up to the 2nd of July post which the knockout matches will begin.

Friday featured six games China and Germany, Dominican Republic and the Netherlands, Croatia and Japan, Thailand and Poland, Canada and South Korea and USA and Italy going head to head against each other in the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League Round 1. In the first game, the Chinese thrashed the Germans at the back of a dominant performance. China won against Germany in a dominant game with a scoreline of 25-19, 25-20, 25-22 (3-0). In the second game, the Dominican Republic fought it out against the Dutch side to take the game 3-2. The Dominican Republic side won with a scoreline of 25-18, 22-25, 25-18, 21-25 and 15-11.
The 2023 Volleyball Women’s Nations League will commence on May 30 and end on July 16.
