The fifth edition of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League began its action yesterday. The Nations League is a yearly competition for international volleyball players. From May 30 to July 16, 2023, the tournament will take place. The decisive round will take held in Arlington, Texas, in the United States, at College Park Centre. Four volleyball confederations’ top 16 nations will compete in the Women’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL). It is one of the top international indoor competitions put on by the FIVB, the organisation that governs the sport. There were some minor changes post which the final roster for the tournament was made. The changes were the results of the 2022 Nations League and 2022 Challenger Cup. Australia was replaced by debutants Cuba in this edition.
Saturday will see Turkey go head-to-head against Italy. Turkey is currently ranked in seventh place while Italy is the current world no.1 and the defending champion. Turkey and Italy last met in the FIVB Nations League. The Italian side had the last laugh in that encounter. Italy came out on top and won the match in straight sets of 3-0. The Turkish side will look to put aside their last result and start their campaign with a win. Italy on the other hand will look to continue their dominant form and defend their title. Even though the Italian side suffered some minor hiccups but they are sure to make there comeback.
Three weekly stages make up the preliminary round of the VNL 2023 women’s competition. Each week, the teams in the two pools are switched around to include all 16 teams. The top eight teams in the standings after three weeks will move on to the championship round. Each team competes in 12 games during the pool round. The last knockout round of the competition will thereafter feature eight teams. After the preliminary round is over, the teams’ rankings will be used to decide the order of the knockout stages. The preliminary stages will be conducted in the following places: Antalya, Nagoya, Hong Kong, Brasilia, Suwon and Bangkok. Preliminary rounds will continue up to the 2nd of July post which the knockout matches will begin.

Friday featured six games China and Germany, Dominican Republic and the Netherlands, Croatia and Japan, Thailand and Poland, Canada and South Korea and USA and Italy going head to head against each other in the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League Round 1. In the first game, the Chinese thrashed the Germans at the back of a dominant performance. China won against Germany in a dominant game with a scoreline of 25-19, 25-20, 25-22 (3-0). In the second game, the Dominican Republic fought it out against the Dutch side to take the game 3-2. The Dominican Republic side won with a scoreline of 25-18, 22-25, 25-18, 21-25 and 15-11.
The 2023 Volleyball Women’s Nations League will commence on May 30 and end on July 16.
