The fifth edition of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Nations League 2023 is underway, continuing the annual tradition of the global men’s volleyball competition. The event is scheduled to run from the 6th of June to the 23rd of July, 2023, with the final round being held at the Ergo Arena in Gdańsk, Poland. This year’s event will introduce a significant change in team composition. Due to the 2022 Nations League and the 2022 Challenger Cup results, Cuba is set to make its inaugural appearance, taking the place previously occupied by Australia.
A total of sixteen teams are set to participate in the contest. Ten of these, including Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Iran, Japan, Poland, Serbia, and the USA, have achieved ‘core team’ status, ensuring their continued presence in future editions. The other six teams – Bulgaria, Canada, China, Cuba, Netherlands, and Slovenia – are competing as ‘challenger teams’, and as such, they face the possibility of relegation from the tournament.
Wednesday will witness the World rank. 1 Poland, the core team, battles it out against another core team, Iran, which is ranked World no.10 in the world. As the core team play each other, Poland will be regarded as favorites, considering their world rankings. Poland’s best finish in the tournament was when they won the runners-up title in the year 2021. On the other hand, Iran’s best finish is fifth place in 2019.
