The Netherlands will be taking on Italy in an intriguing Pool A top-of-the-table contest in the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2022. Phase 1 of the tournament will come to an end with this contest. Both sides are sitting at the top of Pool A with very little to separate them. Even though Italy will be the slight favourites, tournament co-hosts, the Netherlands, cannot be taken lightly. The Women’s World Championship 2022 is hosted in the Netherlands and Poland this year and it will take place from 23rd September to 15th October.
Italy have been supremely impressive in the ongoing tournament. Having won all four matches they have played in the Women’s World Championship 2022 till now, the Italians are sitting at the top of Pool A with 12 points. Meanwhile, the Netherlands are second in the standings and have nine points from the same number of matches as their upcoming opponent. The Dutch side won thrice and lost just once – against Belgium. With very little to separate them, both sets of supporters will be optimistic about their team’s chances of winning.
The 24-team tournament will run from September 23 through October 15. The teams are split up into four groups of six teams each, and they compete in a round-robin format. Each pool’s top four teams advance to the second round and the 16 teams are divided into two pools of eight nations. The countries coming from the same first-round pool only play against opponents from a different first-round pool. Each pool’s top four teams compete in a quarterfinal round, with the winners moving on to the semifinals. The World Championship trophy will be up for grabs for the last-four victorious teams, while the third-place match pits the losers against each other.
