The two rival nations India and Pakistan are set to play an electrifying volleyball match for fifth place at the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou, China. Both teams showcased some remarkable performances in the 19th edition of the Asian Games. After emerging as leaders from their individual groups and surprising many top-tier teams, they narrowly missed out on a semifinal berth.
The Indian team, despite being ranked 73rd globally, gave the fifth-ranked Japanese team a good challenge, but eventually lost by 0-3 (16-25, 18-25, 17-25). Indian setter Muthusamy Appavu, and Ashwal Rai were the standout players in the match, challenging Japan’s elite players. Before this, India had delivered a commendable performance, shocking the formidable Chinese Taipei and registering victories over former silver medalist, Republic of Korea, and Cambodia.
On the other hand, Pakistan, ranked 51st worldwide, enjoyed a solid streak without losing a single set to Chinese Taipei, South Korea, and Mongolia. However, their journey hit a hurdle when they faced a 3-1 defeat against Qatar in the quarter-finals of the Asian Games 2022.
Historically, both volleyball teams of India and Pakistan have finished on the podium in the history of the Asian Games. India has a silver from 1962 and two bronzes earned in 1958 and 1986. Meanwhile, Pakistan secured a bronze in 1962. The two neighbors previously locked horns in the Asian Games 2018 held in Jakarta for a classification match, where India succumbed to a 3-1 defeat.
