Dayana Yastremska’s season has slowed after a strong start to the year. The Ukrainian arrives in Cluj Napoca in decimal form, having won her last match in the second round in Birmingham in June. She has now lost eight consecutive matches. The losing streak began in the quarterfinals of the Birmingham Open, where she was defeated by Zhang Shuai. That was followed by seven consecutive first-round losses, the most recent of which occurred last week in Portoroz. Worse, the World No. 92 hasn’t even won a set in his last eight matches. She is, however, 19-21 overall this season, with all of her victories coming in the early going.
98th in the world Tamara Korpatsch was a lucky loser and advanced to the main draw. In the first qualifying round, the German came back from a set down to defeat Anastasia Gasanova 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, but in the second qualifying round, she was defeated by Elina Avanesyan 4-6, 5-7. Korpatsch has performed well in lower level tournaments this year, winning her first WTA 125 title last month in Budapest. She was also a finalist earlier this year in Marbella. The 27-year-old has two ITF titles to his name, both on clay. She is 14-2 in her last 16 matches at all levels, having won back-to-back ITF Montreaux and Budapest titles last month.
