Varvara Gracheva has lost three straight matches and has only won two of her last 15 matches. Those two victories came not long ago at the Chennai Open, where she advanced to the quarterfinals before bowing out. She has since dropped back-to-back first-round matches in Seoul and Monastir. This season, the World No. 103 has an overall record of 22-26 across levels, and she is 8-17 on the tour. Clay courts bring out the best in Gracheva, at least according to the statistics. The Russian is 7-2 in ITF finals, with all nine matches played on clay. She is 10-12 on hard courts this season, but she was thrashed 6-1, 6-0 by Veronika Kudermetova in the first round of the Jasmin Open last week.
On Sunday, Ysaline Bonaventure defeated Cristina Dinu of Romania 6-4, 7-5 in the second qualifying round to advance to the main draw in Cluj-Napoca. It’s her second appearance in the main draw of a tour-level event. The Belgian qualified for the Tallinn Open two weeks ago, and she followed that up with straight set victories over Shelby Rogers and Jil Teichmann in the first two rounds. The world no. 122 eventually lost in the quarterfinals to Anett Kontaveit, but not without a fight, having taken the Estonian to the third set before exiting the tournament Bonaventure has carried that form to Transylvania, where she beat Kateryna Baindl in the first qualifying round on Saturday after coming back from a set down.
