From Indian Wells until Wimbledon, Wang Qiang has never advanced past the second round of a competition. He charged the hard court semifinals of Prague and 125K Concord. She was unable to carry the potential comeback at the US Open, as she was defeated by Nao Hibino in the qualifying rounds. The former world No. 12 has spent the majority of the season outside the top 100, largely as a result of sitting out the final five or so months of the previous season. Without much success, she has also advanced to the Australian Open third round, Guadalajara semifinal, and Monterrey quarterfinal.
Yanina Wickmayer, who fell to Daria Snigur in the US Open’s second qualifying round after reaching the semifinals in 2009, was upset. She was hoping for a repeat of her Wimbledon performance from June, when she qualified for the main draw and won for the first time in three years. Due to the birth of her first child in April, the Belgian was sidelined for the full 2021 season. After taking a year and a half off, she started playing tennis professionally again in February. She reached the Wimbledon second round and a small W25 final in Israel, although she is still ranked well below 400.
Wang Qiang and Yanina Wickmayer are scheduled to face each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 WTA Chennai Open on Monday, September 12. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 12 and end on September 18.
