Yanina Wickmayer, who fell to Daria Snigur in the US Open’s second qualifying round after reaching the semifinals in 2009, was upset. She was hoping for a repeat of her Wimbledon performance from June, when she qualified for the main draw and won for the first time in three years. Due to the birth of her first child in April, the Belgian was sidelined for the full 2021 season. After taking a year and a half off, she started playing tennis professionally again in February.
