In the second round, he was defeated by fifth seed Andrey Rublev. On October 10, 2022, he attained a new career-high rating of No. 110 as a result. Zhang won in straight sets against Sebastián Báez, the sixth seed, and Márton Fucsovics after earning a spot in Naples to advance to his first ATP Tour quarterfinal of the year and first since 2017.  He thereby became the first Chinese male player to place in the top 100 during the Open Era.

His mother is a former shooter named Qin Wei, and his father is a former Shanghai Shenhua defender named Zhang Weihua, who retired in 2004.
