Despite winning the opening set six games to one, he was defeated in the championship match by fifth-seeded Tomá Machá. Zhang’s performance brought him to No. 138, just two positions shy of his career high. He made his US Open debut, competed successfully in the qualifying round, and, along with his friend Yibing Wu, qualified for the main draw, creating history for his nation. After losing against Tim van Rijthoven and failing to convert seven match points in the third set, he just missed becoming the first Chinese male national to triumph in a Grand Slam main event match in 63 years. He won his second match at the ATP 500 level at the 2022 Astana Open after beating Aslan Karatsev after advancing to the main draw. In the second round, he was defeated by fifth seed Andrey Rublev. On October 10, 2022, he attained a new career-high rating of No. 110 as a result.
