Playing Style

Giorgi is a baseline player with a high level of aggression. She prefers to take the ball early on the rise and has strong, flat groundstrokes. Her two-handed backhand is her most powerful groundstroke, with which she can hit wins from any position on the court. She hits the ball with unwavering power and is regarded as one of the tour’s fiercest hitters. In the process, she defeated three top-25 players: No. 9 seed Elise Mertens in the first round, No. 7 seed Petra Kvitova in the round of 16, No. 15 seed Coco Gauff in the quarterfinals, and Jessica Pegula in the semifinals. She defeated world No. 6 Karolna Plková in the final to win her first WTA 1000 championship, the greatest victory of her career, and becoming Canada’s lowest-ranked champion since No. 80-ranked Serena Williams won the tournament in 2011. With this impressive run, she returned to the top 40 in the WTA singles rankings, climbing nearly 40 spots from 71 to world No. 33 on August 16, 2021.
