By defeating the ninth seed Denis Shapovalov in the second round of the 2020 French Open, his first top-10 win and first victory in five sets, he advanced to the third round, his best finish at a Grand Slam in his career. However, he retired against the 18th seed Grigor Dimitrov in the following round. He lost to the second seed Tallon Griekspoor in the 2021 Murcia Open final in September 2021, his third Challenger final of the year, following his performance in the 2021 US Open second round. At the 2022 Firenze Open, Carballes Baena defeated second seed Matteo Berrettini to advance to his 15th ATP Tour quarterfinal, becoming the first player to do so on a surface other than clay.
