In the opening round of the 2022 Moselle Open on Wednesday, Joao Sousa of Portugal, ranked number 55 in the world, will compete against Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland, ranked number 284 in the world.
Sousa has had his best season in a while, taking home the Maharashtra Open title in February and then coming in second place in Geneva, falling just short against Casper Ruud in a third set tie-break. And as a result, after briefly appearing as though he could drop out of the top 100, he has climbed back up the world rankings. He only won one match in a two-month span, and recent successes have been harder to come by. Nevertheless, he advanced to the second round of the US Open before falling to Cameron Norrie, and while competing for Portugal in the Davis Cup against Brazil, he won both of his singles matches.
Recently, Wawrinka made vague suggestions that he would soon retire, joining his countrymen Roger Federer and Serena Williams, due to a string of injuries that take longer to heal overall and have taken their toll on him. Even if his body tends to let him down, he still loves the game and his competitive spirit is unwavering. He demonstrated this energy by coming back to defeat the 160th-ranked Zsombor Piros of Hungary in the first set of their qualifying on Monday. Wawrinka ripped off ten consecutive games to earn a spot in the main draw after the first four games of the second set were split.
Stan Wawrinka and Joao Sousa are scheduled to face each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 ATP Moselle Open on Wednesday, September 21. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 19 and end on September 25.
