Emma Raducanu and Moyuka Uchijima will face each other in the first round of the 2022 WTA Korea Open on September 20.
The unavoidable has occurred. Emma Raducanu, who was ranked in the top 20 for the entire season, has dropped to 83rd in the world after failing to defend her US Open title. In fact, the Brit was blown off the court in the first round of the season’s final Grand Slam, and as a result, she lost a massive amount of points from winning the title in 2021. She returned to the court last week for the Slovenia Open, winning her first round match against Dayana Yastremska in straight sets. Any signs of a turnaround in fortunes, however, vanished soon after, as Anna-Lena Friedsam knocked her out in round two despite being a 9/2 underdog to win it.
Although Moyuka Uchijima has shown a lot of promise on the ITF tour, which has helped her reach her career-best ranking of 125th in the world, the WTA tour has not yet taken notice of her. In fact, this is Uchijima’s first season at this level, having competed in the French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open qualifiers before making it to the Chennai Open main draw last week. While she won four of her qualifying rounds at the aforementioned Grand Slams, Uchijima has yet to play in a major main draw. Add to that the fact that she also lost in the first round in Chennai.
Emma Raducanu and Moyuka Uchijima are scheduled to face each other in the first round of the 2022 WTA Korea Open on Tuesday, September 20. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 19 and end on September 25.
The 2022 WTA Korea Open is scheduled to commence on September 19 and go on until September 25 this year. The tournament will have five rounds of play excluding the qualifiers. These are the round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.
