On Monday, former champion Stan Wawrinka will compete in the first round of the 2022 US Open against French qualifier Corentin Moutet.
Wawrinka’s career is undoubtedly coming to an end. It can be difficult to witness a great athlete’s decline, especially when injuries are involved. Stan Wawrinka‘s situation involves both injuries and the inevitable ageing process of losing that extra yard of speed. The 37-year-old Swiss one-handed player uses surgically repaired knees. It nearly defies comprehension that he still believes he can compete at the highest level in 2022 despite having uneven form. Since his comeback at the end of March, Wawrinka has triumphed in three games. In that thrilling three-set match against Tiafoe, he triumphed once at Queens and twice in Rome. Amazingly, he hasn’t defeated anyone since leaving London and has dropped his last five games straight. When he visits New York for the first time since 2019 can he reverse his fortunes?
Corentin Moutet has been given a lifeline after suffering a routine straight-set loss to Yibing Wu in the final round of qualification by being awarded a position in the US Open main draw as the lucky loser. Since last year’s Wimbledon, Moutet hasn’t dropped a first-round match at a Grand Slam, demonstrating his ability to compete against top-tier competitors. In fact, the French left-hander stunned Wawrinka at the French Open this year by winning after falling behind a set. Unusually, Moutet utilised that outcome as a launching pad for a spectacular week at the Lyon Challenger, where he romped to capture his first Challenger title since 2019. Moutet is getting ever-closer to making it back to the Top 100 in the world after a year to forget in 2021. And a victory over Wawrinka on Monday, his third in a row, may help his cause.
Stan Wawrinka and Corentin Moutet are scheduled to face one another in the first round match of the US Open 2022 on Monday, August 29 . The 2022 US Open is all set to begin from August 29 till September 11.
The 2022 US Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final for both men’s and women’s. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 29 and conclude on September 11 this year.
