Jiri Vesely, making his ATP Newport debut, defeated Feliciano Lopez, 40, for the 13th time this season in just 14 games to advance to round two. He started the match in total command and never seemed to be in danger of losing, 6-4 6-2. The powerful Czech player, who recently played on grass at Wimbledon and the Ilkley Challenger, where he advanced to the quarterfinals and third round, respectively, won exactly two matches in each match. The former world number 35 last advanced past the first round of an ATP tournament in Dubai in February 2022, where he upset players like Novak Djokovic and Denis Shapovalov his route to the championship match.

With a straight-set victory over fellow countryman Stefan Kozlov in the ATP Newport first round this week, 7-5 6-3, Steve Johnson avoided a hat-trick of first-round exits and increased his opening-round record on the main circuit this year to 9-1. The former world #21 has been unable to build on his strong start in the most of the competitions this year. Only twice in these seven months has he won back-to-back main-draw matches at events on the circuit, and he has yet to play at this level’s quarterfinals (in 2022). The 32-year-old American player has twice reached the ATP Newport quarterfinals, and he won his most recent ATP title here in 2018 after losing just one set the entire season.
